FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTOR
A chiropractor is a health care professional that takes a natural approach to help your body work at its best.
Chiropractors specialize in assessing the spine for any dysfunctional vertebra (vertebral subluxation) that are interfering with the messages between the nervous system and your body.
Your nervous system, which controls all the functions of your body, is protected by your spine. Sometimes the stresses and strains of daily living cause the messages from the brain to not communicate to the body effectively. By making small and specific chiropractic adjustments to the spine, chiropractors can help these messages reach the body more effectively.
Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to:
-
back pain
-
neck pain
-
pain in the joints of the arms or legs
-
headaches
Chiropractors are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises.
WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT
The purpose of a “chiropractic adjustment” is to restore 'normal' joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement. Manipulation or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness allowing tissues to heal.
ARE ADJUSTMENTS SAFE?
Adjustments are “remarkably safe” according to the New Zealand Government’s landmark “Commission of Inquiry into Chiropractic”. (1)
Adjustments are a conservative approach to health that avoid invasive procedures and/or drugs. In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. (2)
